Innovaciones: TRANSGENIC POTATOES WITH LOW SOLANINE LEVELS VIA GENE EDITING

Research published in Biocatalysis and Agricultural Biotechnology found that inhibiting the solanidine galactosyltransferase (sgt1) gene in potatoes resulted in low levels of α-solanine but no changes in α-chaconine levels.

Potatoes naturally contain α-solanine and α-chaconine, which can induce hazardous effects in humans when taken in excessive quantities. Certain stressful factors, such as sun exposure, physical injury, or inappropriate temperature storage, can all promote an increase in glycoalkaloid synthesis in potatoes.

Researchers from India employed CRISPRi/dCas9-KRAB to inhibit sgt1 and reduce α-solanine levels in potatoes. Nutritional examination of these transgenic potatoes reveals no significant differences when compared to wild-type potatoes. The study’s findings have accelerated current research toward generating gene-edited potatoes with enhanced features.
